Nurturing Excellence through Next Generation Standards

Our High School English Department is dedicated to providing an exceptional education that aligns with the rigor of the Next Generation English Language Arts Standards. Our commitment is to empower students to become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and skilled readers and writers, well-prepared for both higher education and future career endeavors. Our curriculum is firmly rooted in the Next Generation English Language Arts Standards. These standards set the bar high, guiding students through a comprehensive journey of language exploration, literary analysis, and effective communication. Our educators engage students with thought-provoking texts, fostering the development of essential skills such as textual interpretation, evidence-based writing, and multimedia literacy.

Enriching Opportunities with College and AP Courses

In addition to the core curriculum, we offer a range of Advanced Placement courses that provide an unparalleled academic experience. Our college level and AP courses immerse students in college-level reading, writing, and analysis. These courses not only align with the Next Generation Standards but also provide students the opportunity to earn college credit and stand out in the competitive college admissions process. Students who earn scores of three or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing receive the AP Capstone Diploma.

New York State Next Generation English Language Arts Learning Standards

The Next Generation English Language Arts (ELA) Standards serve as a comprehensive framework designed to guide English language arts education and literacy development in students. These standards outline the essential knowledge, skills, and competencies that students should attain at various grade levels, from kindergarten through grade 12. The purpose of the Next Generation ELA Standards is to provide clear and consistent expectations for what students should learn and be able to do in the realm of English language arts.

The ELA standards are developed within the context of the Lifelong Practices of Readers and Writers. The practices also indicate that teachers should expect students to read often and widely from a range of and diverse texts, in terms of content, language, origin, medium, and text type.
