Dayton Avenue School and Eastport Elementary School students displayed patriotism in their special activities for Patriots Day on Sept. 11.

Eastport Elementary held its third annual Waves of Patriotism Project. Members of the school community purchased an American flag, which was displayed in recognition of those lives lost during or affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center. Proceeds from the flag purchases were generously donated to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.

At Dayton Avenue, third and fourth grade students participated in a Patriots Day Footprints project. Students wrote thank-you notes, in the shapes of a footprint, to first responders for their courage on 9/11 and for their continuous assistance in keeping the community safe. The footprints, which taught students the meaning of gratitude, were placed on a large poster for the community to read. During the day, students also gathered together on the track to walk 2,200 steps, which is the equivalent of the number of steps first responders had to climb in the World Trade Center.
