The Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School varsity football team was recognized by Section XI as the recipient of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Exceptional Sportsmanship Award for Conference III. During the Dec. 7 board of education meeting, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Kevin Trentowski presented the award to head coach Mike Maratto and varsity football captains Alex Danowski and Ashton Lides.
In addition to game responsibilities, coaches and sports officials are tasked with the way in which athletes and teams behave. After each game, a sportsmanship form rating the opposing coaches, athletes and fans is filled out and submitted.
“To be recognized for this award in a gladiator sport filled with aggression and contact is a testament to Mr. Maratto and his trusted team leaders,” Mr. Trentowski said. “Coach Maratto works with his team 12 months a year and takes his role as ESM coach and role model seriously. And the team captains are right there every step of the way in motivating the team and setting an example.”
The district congratulates Coach Maratto and the varsity football team on this outstanding accomplishment.
