For a second consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Eastport Elementary School as one of New York State’s top elementary schools for 2026. Eastport  ranked #705 (top 40%) out of the more than 47,000 elementary school evaluated, naming it as an educational institution which is not only high achieving but one that successfully educates all its students.

Principal John DeKams made the announcement during an all-school assembly on Jan. 22 and gave credit to the students and teachers for their hard work. “Being recognized once is a wonderful celebration of a good year,” Mr. DeKams said. “But being recognized twice in a row is a statement of who we are. It tells the world, that at Eastport, excellence isn’t an accident – it is our standard. It is a result of a deep-rooted culture that thrives on hard work, dedication and the way we treat one another.”

After the assembly, each of the school’s classes took a photo with the U.S. News & World Report banner and sixth grade students were invited to sign the banner during their lunch period.

Superintendent of Schools Joseph A. Steimel said the board of education and administration constantly work to put programs in place that make students shine. “Being recognized as a top school in the state reflects the dedication of our students, the passion of our teachers and the support of the entire community and speaks to the excellence the District strives for each day,” Mr. Steimel said.
