As parents and students entered Dayton Avenue School’s gymnasium on Aug. 14, the smell of popcorn wafted through the building, bringing back favorite memories of carnivals past. Jackson’s Jubilee, a carnival named in memory of student Jackson Giusto, was located in the school’s newly renovated gymnasium and featured games and activities for special education students.

Carnival administrator Sharon Clune reported that the goal of the festival was to reward the special education students who worked hard during the summer and to bring a greater awareness of the district’s special education program. The games were sensory and adaptive and included a physical education component. Several of the activities were even created by the students in their classrooms. SEPTO supported the carnival and provided snacks and ice cream, and National Honor Society students volunteered their time to run the games and work with students.

Ms. Clune said she was pleased with the turnout and is looking forward to hosting the carnival for another year.
