South Street kindergarten students participated in an annual flower planting in the Kaitlyn Hassard Memorial Garden, which is the school’s courtyard garden in memory of treasured former student Kaitlyn Hassard. Theresa Blangiforti, Pam Byrnes and Sandra Spinosa have been curating the garden since its inception in 2006 and began planting with the students in 2007. This year, Waterdrinker Farms representatives, who annually donate plants, were on hand to instruct the students about the basics of gardening and their care.
The students used their trowels and spades to add colorful flowers to the already established flower beds and to spruce up the space for the spring and summer season.
Principal J.M. Jackson said the garden symbolizes South Street School’s growth. “South Street School is about growth, not only within our memorial garden, but also in the growth mindset we try to instill in our students each and every day.”
