Elementary Music

K-3 General Music

The Music Education of our students begins in the Elementary Schools. In grades K-2 the students work on basic skills such as movement to a steady beat and using their singing voices. The repertoire includes folk, patriotic and seasonal songs. In 3rd grade the students are introduced to note reading, posture and breath control while learning to play the recorder. Students in 3rd grade continue to sing, move and play while exploring different styles of music and various composers.

4-6 Music  Program

Instrumental instruction begins in 4th grade. The students will have the choice of participating in the band, orchestra, or chorus. Students may also participate in an instrumental ensemble as well as chorus. All instrumental and choral instruction take place during the school day.

The instrumental program is designed to start these young musicians on an instrument of their choice in which they will learn the proper skills such as posture, tone, technique and note and rhythm reading. These learning experiences will take place during the instrumental small group lessons and large group rehearsals.

All choral instruction takes place during in school rehearsals. Students in the choral program will focus on vocal technique, group singing, and note and rhythm reading. All members in chorus work together as an ensemble, while also exploring their voices individually so that they may continue to grow as singers.

Our main goal is to develop the musical and instrumental abilities of our K-6 students. The program enriches the students’ cultural and stylistic awareness through exposure to various genres of music. The music education program here at ESM most importantly teaches our young students the importance of discipline, teamwork, communication and self confidence.
