In2Books - Pen Pal - Literacy Mentorship

My 10th Grade Honor students will begin a year-long literacy mentoring program with 2nd grade students from South Street Elementary School (1st Period) and Dayton Avenue Elementary School (2nd Period).

The goal of this mentorship is to promote literacy through Pen Pal Program.  Age appropriate, high-quality picture books have been selected by Dr. Barbera and Mrs. Lassen respective principals from each school.  The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders are matched with my students who will engage in an ongoing, dynamic written conversation (4-5 pen pal letters) about important issues in the book while modeling good reading and writing characteristics.  The goal of this program is to foster reading, writing and thinking skills.  These students will serve as intellectual mentors and friends, giving their student pen pals insights into different points of view, reading strategies as well as assisting in developing writing skills.

Being an In2Books pen pal is a great way to help young people. As literacy coaches, you partner with teachers and families in the development of students' reading, writing, and critical thinking skills - skills we know to be essential to personal and professional success.

Students will participate in a 2009-2010 In2Books “Get to Know You” kickoff gathering their respective schools then we will communicate through pen pal letters.

We close the year in April with a get together at the high school to celebrate the accomplishments of all our students!
