UPK Frequently Asked Questions
Q) Will UPK be available for the 2018-2019 school year?
A) Yes, pending approval of the NYS budget.
Q) How many seats are available?
A) ESM was allocated enough grant funding for 47 children. SCOPE Educational Services added an additional 7 seats (at no charge to taxpayers!), which gives us a total of 54 UPK seats at no charge to parents/guardians through the lottery selection process.
Q) How are the children selected for this program?
A) Students are selected by lottery, as per New York State Education Department's Regulations. Our lottery will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018 at 9:45 AM (South Street School Library). Names will be pulled until all applicants have been assigned a number. The first 54 names pulled will be the students who have secured a seat. All others will be placed on the wait list in the order in which their name was pulled.
Q) My child's birthday is December 2, 2014. Is he eligible for UPK?
A) The cut-off birthdate for UPK eligibility for 2018-2019 is December 1, 2014.
Q) What if I have multiple children eligible for UPK (twins, triplets, etc.)
A) Each child requires their own individual registration and application. Each child will be entered into the lottery on an individual basis. Selection for the UPK program is exclusivly based on the lottery process and the order in which student names are pulled. In order to keep the process fair and equitable for all children and families, please be advised that if you are a parent/guardian of multiple children eligible for UPK, there is a chance one child may be selected through the lottery process and another child not.
Q) If I held my child back from Kindergarten, is she eligible for UPK this year?
A) No, as per New York State Education Department's Regulations for the Universal Pre Kindergarten grant, only a child who is noteligible for Kindergarten in 2018-2019, was born on or before December 1, 2014, and is a district resident is eligible to apply for UPK.
Q) If I can not attend the lottery, how will I be contacted?
A) You will be contacted at the telephone numbers, email address, and/or address you listed on your application as to where your child's name is on the list. The registration materials will be mailed to your home soon after the lottery. If you are in attendance, and your child is one of the students chosen for one of the 54 seats, you will leave the lottery with your registration materials.
