December Book of the Month

  • What a wonderful time of year it is!!  I love sitting under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate and reading a good book!  The December book I will be presenting to your child is very different from the others – The Chocolate Touch written by Patrick Skene Catling.  It is a chapter book and it is perfect for this winter weather!  This funny be-careful-what-you-wish-for story has been delighting children everywhere since it was first published in 1952. It is a true classic!!

If he could, the main character, John Midas, would eat nothing but chocolate all the time, and he'd never share it with anyone. Then one day, John finds a strange coin on the sidewalk and uses it to buy a box of chocolate at a mysterious new candy store.  Suddenly, everything John's lips touch turns to chocolate! Chocolate toothpaste and chocolate water fountains are great, but things get complicated when John can't play the trumpet or bob for apples. Worst of all, he forgets and kisses his mother! The Chocolate Touch has remained a favorite for millions of kids, teachers, and parents for several generations. It's an enjoyable story that pulls in even reluctant readers.

With our upcoming holiday break it is a wonderful time to just enjoy a good book.  Make some hot chocolate, sit under a blanket and read it aloud on a cold winter’s night.  The ultimate goal is to just enjoy a good read aloud.  Have fun!  Change your voice for each character, act silly, color in the pictures in the book, eat chocolate while you’re reading, make the experience memorable!!

All of the activities I will be emailing to you have to do with hot chocolate.  There are math, science, writing and reading activities that can be completed together.   Use all of them or none of them.  It’s your choice.  Nothing can take the place of sharing a good book with your child.  The memories of reading together are priceless!

As always, if you take a picture of your child or whole family reading the book please share it with me.  I would love to see it!!  Please send it to me at zambellij@esmonline.org.  Happy reading!!
