South Street School students who are members of the South Street Shines Club and the Breathe Club organized the school’s annual Souper Bowl can drive during the months of January and February to support Angels of Long Island. Advisers Megan Kelly and Susan Rorke reported that kindergarten students collected a total of 102 cans with  second grade donating 127 cans. First grade collected the most cans totaling  138 cans for a school total of 367 cans.  

Thank you to the South Street community for making the Souper Bowl possible and for helping to ease hunger in the community.

South Street  students and faculty  marked an important milestone this month –  the 100th day of school – with celebrations highlighting academic growth, creativity and classroom spirit. 

Second graders dressed as their perception of 100-year-olds. Teachers used the occasion to reinforce reading, writing and mathematical skills around the number 100 as students participated in art activities using 100 items, writing up to the number 100 and counting 100 artifacts. 

The 100th day of school was also a time of reflection, as teachers assessed their students’ skillset and students reflected on how far they have grown this school year.

During the Feb. 11 board of education meeting, five District directors were granted tenure. 

The District congratulates Director of K-12 Mathematics Justin Grover, Director of K-12 Social Studies Dr. Stephen G. Posselt, Director of K-12 ELA Lalaena Alfredsson, Director of K-12 Science Dr. Jessica Mintz and Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics Patrick Hayes.  

Superintendent of Schools Joseph A. Steimel congratulated the directors on this momentous occasion in their careers. “Being granted tenure is an affirmation that all of you have become an essential and invaluable part of the Eastport-South Manor learning community,” Mr. Steimel said.

District students fostered kindness, a welcoming school environment and a focus on mental health during P.S. I Love You Day, held on Feb. 13. A national movement to bring importance to mental health and to decrease bullying, this important celebration is held annually on the second Friday of each February and assists students in recognizing when a peer or loved-one needs help or a bit of kindness. 

Students wore purple-colored clothing to demonstrate their commitment to the day’s message. At Dayton Avenue School, students filled paper hearts with positive messages and took photos in front of the P.S. I Love You backdrop during their lunch periods. At Tuttle Avenue, students and faculty posed under the school’s purple balloon arch. The entire school also posed in the shape of a heart in the gymnasium and took a commemorative photo. Eastport Elementary School, students contributed positive messages on a gigantic hallway display and took turns taking photos with their classes. 

Additionally, South Street School also created a hallway Leader in Me lighthouse where students contributed positive messages in the design’s rays.
