Eastport Students Compete at Robotics Competition

Students from Eastport Elementary School recently participated in the FIRST LEGO Robotics Competition on Jan. 11 at William Floyd High School.

Twenty-one students from fourth, fifth and sixth grade led by Maria Plitt started preparations for the competition in November by becoming familiar with the tasks their robot needed to complete. Students built and coded a small robot to run the course and compete in different missions. During the competition students needed to adapt to challenges that arose and make fast coding changes.

Students worked on the core values of the program: discovery, inclusion, innovation, teamwork, fun and creativity. They were tasked with demonstrating how these values influenced and guided their collaborative work.

“Our students were truly amazing,” Plitt said. “In such a short time they were able to adjust and work seamlessly together to run the missions. They surpassed my wildest expectations. I couldn’t be more proud of this group of students.”
