Forces at work fueled a recent science lesson at Dayton Avenue Elementary School, as third grade students participated in several engaging hands-on lessons exploring the science unit.
Across the grade level, students engaged in a diverse collection of activities that examined concepts such as friction, motion, inertia, balanced and unbalanced forces, and pendulums.
In one activity students rolled a car down a ramp and collected data on the distance it traveled in centimeters and inches. The student-scientists tracked the effect changing variables had on the car, such as ramp height or the consistency of the rolling surface.
As students collected the trial data, they were able to recognize changes in their results based on the varying conditions applied in each of their experiments.
