Students Establish a Foundation for Future Success

Students across South Street Elementary School have been working diligently to grow their literary abilities as part of the research-based Columbia University’s Teachers College Lucy Calkins Reading Workshop Units of Study.

As part of the readers workshop, students participate in a multifaceted lesson which begins with a mini lesson and then progresses into group lessons, partner work and individual work time. Through this approach, teachers have the ability to monitor individual students’ progress and adjust to best suit their needs.

Throughout the year, students read literature which introduces essential components of a story, including plot, setting, characterization and theme. Across the district students engage in lessons following this proven framework that explore days of importance, such as holidays, and introduce different cultures and places.
