Alzheimer's Association receives check from Dayton Avenue 5th grader

Jillian with Donation

Jillian  is a fifth grader at Dayton Avenue School in Manorville. For several months, Jillian has been saving and collecting money that she planned to donate to the Alzheimer's Association. She found an empty edible arrangements container and started to fill it with change.

She amassed $100.76 to donate to Alzheimer's care, support and research. "I did it for my Meema," Jillian said. Her Grandma Beverly passed away from Alzheimer's disease and Jillian's family has been very involved in raising funds and awareness of the disease.

"My favorite memory of my Meema was when she used to pick me up from pre-k and I would go to her house every day," Jillian shared. "We would watch baby shows together."

Jillian's family participates in Walk to End Alzheimer's in Yaphank each year as team Cardinals for the Cure. They plant purple flowers in the promise garden in memory of Beverly. For more information about Walk to End Alzheimer's, visit alz.org/walk.

Elizabeth, Jillian's 15-year-old sister, plans to attend Alzheimer's Advocacy Day in Albany on March 5 to share her Alzheimer's story with our elected officials.  She will join other New Yorkers in the Legislative Office Building to urge lawmakers to make Alzheimer's a priority.  Jillian shared that she will attend this very important event as soon as she's a little older.
