ESM Installs New AED Through Louis J. Acompora Grant Program

The Eastport-South Manor Central School District is expanding access to life-saving equipment with the installation of a new AED at the high school athletic complex, made possible through a partnership with the Louis J. Acompora Foundation.
The AED was provided through the Louis J. Acompora Grant Program and is housed at the athletic complex concession stand. While AEDs are already available in each of the district’s school buildings, this new installation expands access to critical emergency equipment for students, staff, families and community members attending athletic events and other activities, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The Foundation was established in memory of Louis J. Acompora, who tragically died on March 25, 2000, at just 14 years old after experiencing sudden cardiac arrest caused by commotio cordis during his first high school lacrosse game. Since then, his family has dedicated themselves to raising awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and increasing access to AEDs to help prevent similar tragedies.
During the dedication, the district had the privilege of personally thanking Louis’ mom, Karen Acompora, and her team for their tireless advocacy and commitment to saving lives. Since the passage of Louis’s Law in New York State, 150 lives have been saved, emphasizing the importance of accessible AEDs.
