STEAM Team Gains Real-World Insight from Local Architect

Sixth grade members of the STEAM Team at Eastport Elementary School recently connected with architect Dana Gearrity, gaining insight into the profession and valuable advice as they prepare for the Future City competition.
The Future City competition brings STEM learning to life by challenging students to design a city 100 years in the future. This year’s theme requires them to create a city that can prevent, protect against and recover from wildfires.
During their virtual meeting with Gearrity, students learned more about her work as an architect and asked questions about her career and the design process. They also sought her advice as they continue developing their vision for their Future City.
The visit held an especially meaningful connection to the students' own school community. Gearrity has worked on projects within the Eastport-South Manor School District, including the design of the classroom where the STEAM Team meets and collaborates.
The opportunity allowed students to see firsthand how the concepts they are exploring through STEAM can translate into real-world careers and projects. As they continue preparing for the Future City competition, the students are putting their creativity, problem-solving and engineering skills to work.
